"European Transport Policy is about connecting people. Politics concerning transport are often seen as being technical and removed from the citizens. However, the following sentence holds true for the transport sector: Europe is more than a liberal market, Europe is based on shared values and exchange!" This is exactly what a common European transport policy is aiming to achieve.

A coordinated transport policy is indispensable for the modern European economies. It is more about the intelligent optimization of existing transport systems, than the constant expansion of infrastructure. A modern transport policy has to take social, ecological, and economic factors into account, and has to lead to an improvement of living conditions in the long term. The biggest challenge for transport policy in Europe is to balance the increasing demand in transport and better mobility with the demand for improved environmental, health, and living standards.

In addition to the Council of Transport Ministers and the European Commission, the European Parliament is also engaged in the coordination of the European Transport Policy. The Committee on Transport and Tourism deals with the development of a common policy in the areas of rail and road transport, as well as the areas of air and maritime transport. Main concerns are the extension of the European transport network, transport safety, tourism, and the sustainable development of transport, under consideration of all the social, ecological, and economic factors.
